Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea)

    • A deeply rooted and tufted winter green perennial with short underground stems.
  • Climate :
    • Subtropical
  • Moisture Requirements :
    • 650mm + per annum
  • Soil Preference
    • Well adapted to heavy wet soils which are high in organic matter.
    • In dry areas, irrigation is advisable.
  • Sowing Rate
    • Rows : 180mm (20 kg / ha)
    • Broadcast : 25 kg / ha
  • Planting Time :
    • March – July
    • Irrigation required if sown after March
  • Planting Method :
    • Establish on a fine and firm seed bed
  • Management :
    • Palatability can be improved if it is well fertilized
    • A valuable species for grazing during early autumn period when annual rye grass pastures are not yet sufficiently well established to be grazed.
  • Advantages
    • It associates well with clover and can therefore be used in grass-legume mixtures.
    • Can be used for grazing and silage
    • Can withstand extremely cold winters
    • Excellent spring and autumn grazing
  • Limitations
    • Not very palatable unless well fertilized
    • Not suited for regions with very high summer temperatures, under these conditions weed invasion becomes a problem.
    • Poor regrowth during winter
    • Poor quality during summer
