Smutsfinger Grass (Digitaria eriantha)

  • Description :
    • Very palatable indigenous, tufted grass
    • Can grow up to 2 m tall.
  • Climate :
    • Subtropical
  • Moisture Requirements :
    • 600 mm + per annum.
  • Soil Preference :
    • Highly adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions.
    • Grows well on shallow stony soils.
  • Sowing Rate :
    • Rows : 5kg / ha AgriCote : 7kg / ha
    • Broadcast : 8kg / ha AgriCote : 10kg / ha
  • Planting Method :
    • Plant on very firm seedbed.
    • Roll after sowing.
    • Good results also achieved with very shallow incorporation of seed into the ground before rolling.
  • Management :
    • Good quality summer grazing from middle November.
    • Can be used during winter for foggage, provided it is rested in the late summer.
    • Avoid hard and continuous grazing.
    • Higher seeding rate helps control weeds.
    • If mixed with Rhodes grass (‘Summercote’), earlier grazing can be achieved.

      • Bad grazing management not tolerated.
      • Over-grazing will radically reduce pasture productivity.
