Rye (Secale cereale)

  • Description :
    • A winter cereal used extensively throughout South Africa, except the coastal sub-tropical and tropical regions.
    • A winter or stooling rye as well as intermediate and spring types are available.
  • Climate :
    • Subtropical / temperate
  • Moisture Requirements :
    • 300mm + (as for oats)
  • Soil Preference :
    • Widely adapted to most soil conditions but performs particularly well on light, sandy soil types.
  • Sowing Rate :
    • Rows : 30cm : 25 – 40 kg/ha
    • Broadcast : 50 – 60 kg/ha
  • Planting Time :
    • September to October – cooler areas (winter rainfall)
    • April to May – warmer areas (summer rainfall)
  • Planting Method :
    • As per oats
  • Management :
    • Spring types need an increase in day length and rise in temperature to enable seed production.
    • Early plantings are ready for grazing within 60 days.
    • Rotational graze for best results.
    • Winter types need a long, cold spell to develop seed, these can therefore be planted a lot earlier than spring types.
  • Advantages :
    • Can be used for grazing, hay, silage as well as grain feed.
    • More suitable for silage than oats.
  • Limitations :
    • Not as palatable as oats
    • Not recommended for foggage
