Perennial Rye Grass (Lolium perenne)

  • Description :
    • An outstanding evergreen pasture grass.
    • Has a high nutritional value and dry matter yield.
    • It grows best where cool to mild summers are experienced and where the annual rainfall exceeds 900mm per annum.
    • Supplementary irrigation is advisable.

    • Deep well-drained sandy loam to clay loam soils
  • Sowing Rate
    • Rows : 20 – 25 kg / ha
    • Broadcast : 25 – 30 kg / ha
    • Mixture : 20 kg / ha
  • Planting Time :
    • March – April
  • Planting Method :
    • Plant on fine, well prepared seed bed.
    • Irrigate until seedlings are well established and have formed strong secondary roots.
  • Management :
    • Highly productive grass producing excellent yield under good management practices.
    • Production costs are high therefore these pastures are used specifically for milk production, fat lamb production and for rounding off weaners.
    • Avoid heavy defoliation in summer to prevent root scorching.
  • Advantages
    • Very palatable pasture grass.
    • Outstanding for planting in a mixture with clover.
  • Limitations
    • High production costs
    • Not strongly perennial – needs to be re-established every 3 – 4 years
    • Supplementary irrigation recommended.
