Japanese Radish (Raphanus sayivus)

  • Description :
    • A palatable, succulent tuber which provides good production during winter.
  • Climate :
    • Subtropical/ Tropical
  • Moisture Requirements :
    • 350 mm + from January onwards – supplementary irrigation
  • Soil Preference :
    • Well drained, clay soil types which retain moisture are most suitable.
  • Sowing Rate :
    • Rows : 0.6 m apart : 5 – 6 kg / ha (In row spacing 0.3 m)
  • Planting Time :
    • Mid December to mid February in the cooler areas
    • Mid January to mid March in the warm to hot areas.
  • Planting Method :
    • Plant on a fine, weed free seed bed.
    • Weed control during the initial 3 – 4 weeks after emergence is critical.
  • Management :
    • High populations / ha reduce tuber size.
    • Ideal sizes obtained when spacing in the row varies from between 0.3 – 0.45 m
    • Fertilization should be based on an analysis.
    • Generally though NPK at 250 kg/ha can be recommended at planting.
    • Top dress 3 – 4 weeks after emergence with 150 kg LAN/ha
    • Peak production is reached in April.
    • Plants can survive through to August
  • Advantages :
    • CP content leaves : 13 – 20% : CP content tubers : 7 % (Highly digestible)
    • Excellent for sheep, particularly during autumn when lambing occurs.
    • Yields 4 – 8 tons DM/ha : 40 – 80 tons/ ha – wet mass
    • Can be utilized 12 – 14 weeks after planting
    • Carrying capacity at approx. 40 tons wet mass / ha = 140 ewes or 30 LAU/ha for one month
    • Daily intake per ewe = 10kg and per LAU = 40kg
  • Limitations :
    • Cutworm and aphids need to be controlled.
