FORAGE SORGHUM

  • Description :
    • A sorghum x sudan grass cross used extensively for summer cropping in the RSA.
  • Climate :
    • Subtropical
  • Moisture Requirements :
    • 650mm + or irrigation
  • Soil Preference :
    • Widely adapted to most soil types. Avoid soils prone to waterlogging.
  • Sowing Rate :
    • Dry land :
      • Low rainfall ; 0.9 – 1.5 m rows ; 4 – 6 kg / ha
      • High rainfall ; 0.4 – 0.8 m rows or broadcast ; 15 – 25 kg / ha
  • Planting Time :
    • Mid October to mid January
  • Planting Method :
    • A fine well prepared, weed free seedbed is essential. Soil temperature 16 – 18 deg C
  • Management :
    • Graze when plants are 0.6 to 1 m high.
    • Rotational grazing is advisable.
    • Don’t graze for more than approx. 6 consecutive days and avoid grazing to a length shorter than 150 mm.
    • After each grazing period apply N at 20 – 40 kg/ha, weather permitting.
    • Plants must not be allowed to reach the initial reproductive growth phase as this will reduce regrowth significantly after grazing.
    • To avoid prussic acid poinoning, do not graze on wilted or frost damaged pasture.
    • For successful growth, a soil analysis is preferable where P & K levels should be as follows :
      • P – 10 ppm
      • K - > 80 ppm
  • Advantages :
    • 8 – 12 ton DM/ha
    • Provides good grazing
    • Ideal for hay
    • Ideal for silage
    • Can be used as foggage in the lower rainfall areas.
    • First cut or grazing can be utilized 42 days after emergence under ideal conditions.
  • Limitations :
    • Not suitable for horses
    • Avoid soils with acid saturation levels of 10% +
