Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata)

    • Tolerates a fairly wide range of soil types but does not tolerate water logging

    • Rows : 180mm (15 – 20 kg / ha)

    • February – July
  • Planting Method :
    • Plant on well prepared weed free lands
  • Management :
    • Recommended under irrigation but also for dry land where rainfall exceeds 750mm per annum.
    • During extended dry periods, supplementary irrigation would be advisable.
    • Responds well to fertilization.
    • Frequently grown as a pasture grass, either alone or with clover
  • Advantages
    • High production rates in spring and autumn
    • Produces more dry matter than rye grass during the summer months but not as much during the winter months.
    • Makes excellent foggage if planted with clover
    • Can produce dry matter of up to 15 tons / ha
    • Crude protein 12 – 15%
    • Digestibility 60 – 65%
  • Limitations
    • Slow to establish
    • Cultivars vary in their sensitivity to heavy grazing as well as their use for foggage.
    • Produces excellent grazing throughout the year but slow to recover during winter
