Blue Buffalo Grass (Cenchrus ciliaris)

  • Description :
    • Tufted, shrubby perennial with rhizomes.
    • Molopo grows up to 1,6m tall; Gayndah to a height of 1m (finer texture)
  • Uses :
    • Mainly used by beef cattle farmers.
    • Also used for dairy cattle and sheep (esp. Gayndah)
  • Climate :
    • Subtropical
  • Moisture Requirements :
    • Minimum 300mm per annum.
  • Soil Preference :
    • Grows on most types of soil, but prefers heavier soils.
  • Sowing Rate :
    • Rows :
      • 5 kg / ha
      • AgriCOTE : 8 kg / ha
    • Broadcast :
      • 7kg / ha
      • AgriCOTE : 12 kg / ha
  • Planting Time :
    • Establish in summer.
    • September – February
  • Planting Method :
    • A fine, compacted seedbed is required.
  • Management :
    • Yearly aeration of the soil to a depth of 15-20cn as well as cutting back of dead material to stimulate new tillers.
    • Should be grazed at young and succulent stage.
  • Advantages :
    • Palatable with high leaf production.
    • Extremely drought resistant.
    • Lifespan of 30+ years.
    • High grazing value.
    • Recovers rapidly after defoliation and develops new shoots from rhizomes.
    • Has the ability to re-seed.
    • No danger of bloat.
    • Outstanding disease tolerance.
  • Limitations :
    • Will survive water logging for a short period only.
    • Poor frost tolerance.
