Babala (Pennisetum glaucum)

    • A quick growing summer annual used for grazing and silage.
  • Climate :

  • Moisture Requirements :
    • 400 mm + per annum
  • Soil Preference :
    • Widely adaptable.
    • Avoid water logged soils
  • Sowing Rate :
    • Rows : 0.9 ; 5 – 10 kg / ha
    • Broadcast : 15 – 25 kg / ha
    • Irrigation : 25 – 30 kg / ha
  • Planting Time :
    • October to December
  • Planting Method :
    • See forage sorghum
  • Management :
    • Graze between 400 – 600 mm in hight.
    • Don’t graze shorter than 150 mm – this allows for quick rejuvenation.
    • Fertilize as for forage sorghum.
  • Advantages :
    • Well developed root system.
    • Uses soil moisture effectively.
    • Good drought tolerance – recovers quickly once rains commence
    • Controls witchweed (rooiblom)
    • No danger of bloat
    • Suitable for horses
    • Excellent grazing
    • Can produce up to 20 ton silage / ha, add 2 % molasses
  • Limitations :
    • Avoid soils with acid saturation levels of 10% +
    • Not suitable for hay
    • Not suitable for foggage
