Arrow Leaf Clover (Trifolium vesiculosum)

  • Description :
    • An annual legume, which during its early stages of growth remains prostrate which later can grow to approx. 1 m in height
  • Climate :
    • Subtropical / temperate
  • Moisture Requirements :
    • 750 mm + per annum
  • Soil Preference :
    • No particular preference but water logged soils must be avoided
  • Sowing Rate :
    • Broadcast : 8 – 10 kg / has
    • Rye grass mixture :
      • 8kg / ha clover
      • 8 – 10 kg / ha rye grass
  • Planting Time :
    • March / April
  • Planting Method :
    • Establish on a firm, fine weed free seed bed
  • Management :
    • Grows slowly during autumn and winter.
    • A production peak is reached in spring.
    • High levels of fertilization are required.
  • Advantages :
    • No danger of bloat
    • Can be used as a lay crop for soil improvement
    • Can be used as foggage during winter
    • Can be used as a mixture with annual rye grass
  • Limitations :
    • High levels of fertilization required, therefore expensive
    • Seed has a hard seed coat and scarification before planting is advised.
