Annual Rye Grass(Lolium multiflorum)

Description :
Westerwold types
  • Cultivars of this type flower when day length is sufficient.
  • They should be planted in early autumn.
  • Utilization can begin from 6 – 8 weeks after planting.
  • This can continue through to October or even December depending on the cultivar and production region.
Italian types
  • These rye grass cultivars require a period of cold to stimulate seed production.
  • They can be established in early spring and will grow for a period of 18 months.
  • They grow most vigorously in spring, autumn and the following spring after which they produce seed, having been subjected to sufficient cold during the winter months.
  • Can also be planted in autumn but will not yield as well during mid-winter as does the Westerwold type.
  • CLIMATE :
    • Subtropical / temperate
  • MOISTURE REQUIREMENTS :
    • Preferably well drained sandy loam to clay loan type soils.
  • SOIL PREFERENCE :
    • Preferably well drained sandy loam to clay loan type soils.
  • SOWING RATE :
    • Rows : 20 – 25 kg / ha
    • Broadcast : 25 – 30 kg / ha
    • Mixtures : 20 kg / ha
  • PLANTING TIME :
    • Spring and autumn depending on type and utilization required.
  • PLANTING METHOD :
    • Plant on fine, well prepared seed bed. Irrigate until seedlings are well established and have formed strong secondary roots.
  • MANAGEMENT :
    • Highly productive grasses producing excellent yield under good management practices.
    • Production costs are high therefore these pastures are used specifically for milk production, fat lamb production and for rounding off weaners.
  • ADVANTAGES :
    • Highly nutritious / palatable
    • Provides excellent grazing
  • LIMITATIONS :
    • High production costs
    • Requires full on irrigation (25mm per week)
